Awakening the Meditator – 4 Week Course Starting January 10th

There are two main parts to establishing a meditation practice:

1) Learning it.

2) Doing it.

They are harder than you might expect. For one thing, learning meditation is not quite like learning how to assemble a cabinet. Yes, there are steps to practicing meditation, such as posture, breath, etc. However, we aren’t furniture and we aren’t really constructing anything at all either. Meditation is about being human, not trying to become some idealized version of ourselves. This key component of meditation is largely lost when people only learn from an app or podcast.

There is a reason why meditation instruction has almost exclusively been transmitted person-to-person, rather than via written transmission, for thousands of years. In the same way that children learn from what their parents actually do, rather than what they say, meditation students likewise learn something other than just the words of an experienced teacher. It’s hard to quantify, but it’s a powerful connection between teacher and student that helps learning really flourish.

After learning, there is doing it. Meditation – like writing, tax prep, or making an uncomfortable phone call – can engender a certain kind of resistance in the individual. Even if our intellect knows the benefits, our old habits can keep us busy and distracted enough to avoid establishing a regular meditation practice. Somehow, it’s hard to find 10 minutes to meditate!

My new 4 week course, “Awakening the Meditator,” is a three-person class designed to overcome these obstacles, and help you create a regular meditation practice that works for you. The first series begins on January 10, and the second series begins on February 7. In this course, you will learn:

– Techniques for working skillfully with pain, strong emotions, and stress.

– How to release tension and stress with a practice that draws on the Alexander Technique.

Meditation isn’t something you learn once and then master. Most people need to hear the instructions many times to take it to heart, and to prevent it from becoming a dry or self-aggressive exercise. So this class is appropriate for both beginners and those who have already begun to meditate.
