In 2008, the British Medical Journal published results of a study that looked at the Alexander Technique being used for pain relief and management. The study showed an 86% reduction in days in pain per month for patients using the Alexander Technique. Intriguingly, researchers found that just 6 lessons in the Alexander Technique resulted in long term pain relief for people suffering from chronic back issues. Participants who took 24 lessons in the Technique experienced less time out from work, scored lower on certain disability tests, and reported less pain. The safe, essentially conservative nature of the Technique is highlighted by the participants who reported “no adverse effects.” There was no rough manipulation, no brain fog, and no scarring (or sharp things for that matter). The student is learning how to improve the use of their self.
Or, as the researchers so thoroughly put it, “The Alexander Technique is thus distinct from manipulation, back schools, and conventional physiotherapy. The practice and theory of the technique, in conjunction with preliminary findings of changes in postural tone and its dynamic adaptability to changes in load and position, support the hypothesis that the technique could potentially reduce back pain by limiting muscle spasm, strengthening postural muscles, improving coordination and flexibility, and decompressing the spine.”
The participants reported long-term improvement because they learned skills to take care of their back and their body. It’s not just about making you feel better in the short term (though that’s quite a relief), it’s about equipping you to live with more energy and less pain for the rest of your life and not just while you are taking lessons.
